Day #46-Hosteling it up. Miles hiked: 0.0

Today was a magical day of rest. We won’t take this many zeros later in the trail, but while the terrain is hard, it is such a necessary part of staying the course.

We’ve found a lovely hostel to stay at in town. For those unfamiliar with hostel life, it’s basically a large communal home for travelers of all kinds. You can get a bunk in a big room for 30 bucks a night (great if you’re solo) or a private room for still cheaper than a hotel. With that comes a lovely communal living space, a kitchen, laundry, and everything else you’d need at home. Good vibes.

Since it’s Sunday, I also got to visit the Methodist church in town. As messy as church can be, it was so so good to be among “family,” sing, and be welcomed and held.

By afternoon, I also got to meet another medical student at the University of Colorado who is also involved in rural medical education. We met online through a national board, and met today to drink beer and work on a presentation we’re giving in July. Oh the things you can do on a zero…

Evening was filled with cooking a vegan lentil curry feast for the entire hostel, drinking beer on the porch, and not wanting to leave.

Sad to leave Salida, but back to trail we go…
