Day #23-Coming back swinging. Miles hiked: 32.6

After my less than victorious end to the day yesterday, I was eager to put the puke behind me and make up those lost miles. My appetite has far from returned, but my body needs the calories so force-feeding it is today!

Thankfully, with lots of flat road, cranking miles hasn’t been too much of a challenge. We spent most of the day on a huge, flat mesa enjoying more high desert environment.

By evening, we reached the end of the mesa and perhaps one of my favorite views of all of New Mexico—the mesa disappearing below and  an expanse of rock formations, mesas, and canyons as far as the eye could see.

The last miles of the day were spent traversing the valley and pushing into the night under our favorite desert “moon sun.” No headlamps needed!

It’s been a long day, but falling asleep amongst the cacti with the North Star still guiding the way are the kind of nights I’ll miss most after New Mexico.
