Day #22-There’s a first time for everything. Miles hiked: 18.0

Today started with just the excitement of our first “real mountain,” at 11,301 ft. It definitely got my heart rate up to climb over 2000 ft in less than 3 miles, but the wind and sub-freezing temps were even more refreshing.

However, Mt. Taylor had more to offer than just a nice morning workout and a view. I’ve been at altitude straight from sea level with no issues many times in the past, but today it just didn’t work out that way. I started feeling a little gross on the climb and it culminated in puking up all my hard-carried water and calories at lunch. Whoops.

I still hiked another 5ish miles after the incident to make it to water, but wasn’t feeling too hot so my friends decided not to leave me for dead and let me make camp and pass out for the night at 4 pm.

When at first you don’t succeed, there’s always tomorrow.
