Day #18-Wow, it must have been hot in here. Miles hiked: 26.6

Today was another long road walk, but we got to see a huge lava field, so it made it all worth it.

After cranking out 13 morning miles to finish the Cebolla, we got on a highway where the wind began to whip, yes Wizard of Oz style.

After lunch, we got off the official route for an adventure along The Narrows at El Malpais National Monument, an ancient caldera with a MASSIVE lava field. Our route avoided walking over it for 10 miles, but instead gave us a birds eye view.

The descent was even more of an adventure with a sketchy rock scramble…

However, it came with a natural arch, La Ventana, to look forward to after the scary part was done.

A snack at a picnic table by the arch and nine more road miles on weary feet later, we decided that we’d had enough.

Special thanks to the El Mapais ranger station for not kicking us off your sidewalk—Goodnight!
