Day #42-The journey is the destination. Miles hiked: 16.2

Today started with a trip to the post office to bounce my iPad (I am still having to do work for a scholarship program I’m part of while in town and decided to stop carrying and start mailing the thing) and a hitch back up to Spring Creek pass. Thanks to our wonderful driver who commits to picking up hikers every Wednesday all season long!

We started off climbing Snow Mesa “llama style,” which is what I call it when hikers band together and hike like a pack of llamas to make a hard climb a team event. The results:

After walking on the flat mesa for several miles, it was back into the mountains and towards our first 14er, one of the 58 mountains in Colorado whose peak is over 14,000 ft. This one is San Luis, the lowest of the 14ers at 14,014 ft.

While gazing at San Luis, I also made another futile attempt to tape up my shoes. Even though we haven’t covered nearly as many miles as it took to kill my first pair, these guys are already busted open on both sides. Colorado is hard on both people and their shoes!

Since Gusha, Nanners, and I plan on taking the side trip to summit San Luis tomorrow, we decided to camp early before the big climb. A welcome change in pace!

Finally, as implied by the title of this blog, Gogo has made the very brave decision to honor what she truly needs this summer and return home to Utah. While we will miss her dearly, I am so grateful for the time we had to hike together. Higher, further, faster my friend!
