Day #28-Roadside bar crawl. Miles hiked: 25.6

Today we descended off the mesa to meet highway 84, the beginning of our walk to Chama. But first, we needed some road snacks so we hitched a ride to a nearby town to find a lovely general store with fresh made tortillas, good coffee, and great folks. There’s a free bus that whisked us back to where we hit the road and off we went.

The road walk began like any other road walk…hot, windy in places, and full of my constant anticipation that my feet would have another meltdown. However, a little over 10 miles in we found a roadside bar full of local ranchers. In addition to two buds, I learned all about cattle ranching and local lore.

Also in this photo, meet our friend Hurricane. He’s a Kiwi that comes to the states every year to hike and has been a great friend to us.

Goodnight from our stealth campsite on the side of the road.
